What is spackling?

The most economical form of stucco is spackle spraying. During spackling, a layer of plaster is applied under high pressure to walls and/or ceilings. The plasterer does this in two layers. First, the knife layer is applied, which levels the surface. Then the second layer, also known as the chipping layer, is applied. This layer serves as a finish for the walls and/or ceilings and also determines the structure of the spackle.

Spackling is done by machine and this reduces the labor time and therefore the total price for the work, which is why this form of stucco is often significantly more economical than other stucco work. The standard color of spray paint is white, but there are numerous alternative colors to choose from.

Method of spraying in Amsterdam and surroundings

The experts at Aannemer Amsterdam have extensive experience in spraying walls and ceilings in countless Amsterdam (new construction) homes. We have developed an efficient and professional working method that ensures that the spackling is applied carefully and professionally.

The method used by the specialists at Aannemer Amsterdam when applying spackle spraying in (new construction) homes in Amsterdam and the surrounding area:

Step 1: Your desires for the look

First of all, it’s important to know what you want with an eye toward the spray paint job. Do you prefer a fine grain in the standard white color to create a standard wall or do you prefer a more striking look with a coarse grain structure and a cool color? There are countless possibilities and looks to create with spackling walls and ceilings.

Step 2: Preparatory work

Before our specialist can start applying the spackle coating, preparations for the work are very important to achieve a beautiful result. Preparations include taping the area where the work will take place and checking walls and ceilings for unevenness. Are these present? Then it is necessary to prepare the wall or ceiling for the purpose of the spackling work.

Step 3: Creating a smooth surface

Preferably, spray paint is applied to a smooth surface. If there are pits or holes on the wall, they should be leveled first. This ultimately ensures the best result when the spray paint is applied.’=

Step 4: Application of knife layer

Once large unevennesses have been eliminated, the first coat, the cut coat, can be applied to your walls and ceilings. Our specialist does this extremely carefully to achieve the best possible result.

Step 5: Application of chipping layer

Then the second layer, also known as a chipping layer, is applied. This layer serves as a finish for the walls and/or ceilings and also determines the structure and color of the spackling.

Step 6: Cleaning up the processed areas

The rooms treated by our specialist are left neatly tidy and broom clean. Masking tape is carefully and gently removed once the job is done.

Pay 9% VAT for spackling

If your home in Amsterdam is more than two years old, you can take advantage of the reduced VAT rate applied by plastering companies. The applicable VAT rate for plastering is 9% instead of the usual 21%. This reduced VAT rate applies to plastering work, but also to:

Example:

The difference in the reduced VAT rate is significant compared to the regular rate, but this is better reflected in a trial calculation. We have written these out for you below:

Suppose you have your walls with a total area of 150 m² provided with sauce-ready plaster a €12,- per m². The price for this project, excluding VAT, is €1800,-. Over this amount, according to the regular VAT rate of 21%, you would pay a total of €378. Now that this VAT rate has been lowered for plasterers to 9%, you will pay only €162 on this project. This is a significant difference of over €200,- you will save! This makes it a lot cheaper to have your walls and ceilings professionally plastered by a plastering company.

Helpful saving tips

To keep the cost of having stucco applied to your home or office building low, we have listed some savings tips for you. You can read these here.

Perform preparatory work yourself

Make sure the plasterer’s room is well prepared, by which we mean: move any furniture etc. to one side, tape walls and baseboards yourself. This ensures that the plasterer spends less time and less money. You can also choose to clean up the room after the work and put the furniture back yourself. This also saves the plasterer time and you save money.

Get more work done at once

Having everything plastered at once will ultimately cost you less money than having a room plastered one at a time, for example. When plastering a larger area, our plasterer can work more efficiently and this results in a more economical price per square meter. Thus, you are often cheaper by having several rooms or spaces plastered than by having small areas plastered.

Reduced VAT rate

As we mentioned earlier, there is an advantageous VAT rate on plastering projects in homes older than two years, namely 9% VAT instead of 21% VAT. For example, if you want to apply decorative plaster to a wall of 40 square meters at €18 per m², you will pay €65.
