There are several types of roofing to choose from for a flat roof. Below we explain the pros and cons of each choice. We also tell you what the prices are per type of roofing so you can make a choice that fits your needs and budget.
Bitumen has been a well-known type of roofing material for flat roofs for many years. Bitumen is also called roofing or roofing leather. Bitumen is often chosen because it is very inexpensive. Bitumen is made from petroleum and comes in a variety of colors. Our roofer applies bitumen in strips and sometimes in multiple layers. Bitumen can be glued or applied with a torch. It is important that the strips overlap well to prevent leaks.
In recent years, EPDM has also been widely chosen for flat roofs. This is because EPDM lasts longer than bitumen. However, EPDM is slightly more expensive than bitumen. EPDM is a waterproof type of rubber, it is very elastic and therefore will not deform or tear easily. It is also UV resistant. Our roofer can have EPDM cut to size and thus install it as one seamless whole. The advantage of a seamless whole is that there is less chance of leakage. EPDM is applied with adhesive.
You can also choose PVC roofing for your flat roof. PVC, like EPDM, is very elastic so it does not deform or crack easily due to different weather conditions. PVC is also applied by glue. PVC is available in different thicknesses. The thickness also determines the lifespan of the PVC roofing.

The most commonly chosen roofing material for a pitched roof is still tiles. Tiles are cheap and have a good price-quality ratio and are quick to install. Concrete tiles are the cheapest, but if you are looking for an authentic look, you can also choose ceramic tiles. These are slightly more expensive. Depending on the pitch of your roof, you can choose hollow or flat roof tiles.
Do you have a limited budget? Then you can opt for roofing sheets. Currently, roofing sheets are the cheapest roofing material available. Everyone is familiar with traditional corrugated metal, bitumen or plastic sheets or trapezoidal aluminum or steel sheets. But did you know that there are also roofing sheets with the look of a tiled roof? These are also made of aluminum or steel and come in a variety of colors and finishes.
Who doesn’t know them? Beautiful monumental buildings with slate roofs? Slate roofing is very light but installation takes longer than the normal roof tile. There are slates made of fiber cement, which are actually artificial slates. And the original slates from natural stone. The natural slates have a very long lifespan.
Are you looking for a rustic look? Then choose a beautiful thatched roof! This can be placed in the traditional way, this is called an open thatched roof. The thatch lies on battens so that you can see the thatch on the inside of the house. Nowadays a closed thatched roof is often chosen. Here the thatch lies on a closed roof of insulation boards or plywood. This has greater fire safety and less draft or dust.
Maybe you did not know, but a green roof is also possible on a pitched roof. However, only mosses, succulents and various types of herbs can be placed on it. Please note that the slope should not be too large. Does your roof have a pitch greater than 35 degrees? Then the green roof must be installed using special techniques to prevent shifting.
Do you want to make your roof a real eye-catcher? Then choose zinc roofing! Zinc roofing provides a great look also zinc is very flexible so it is also good on alternatively shaped roofs. Zinc roofing is a bit more expensive to buy but it lasts a very long time.
You may have been able to make a choice by now. But perhaps there is too much choice for you and you are wondering which type of roofing material is best to choose. Choosing a particular type of roofing depends on several factors.
